"Life Along the Death Strip", from Time Magazine, Sep. 15, 1980

There is no doubt why the fence is there. East Germany claims the fortified frontier is purely defensive, but many watchtowers do not even afford a view of West Germany. All, however, offer a clear field of fire back to the east. Fortifications are being refined and modernized continually. According to Western estimates, the East Germans have invested well over $7 billion in building and maintaining the barrier. "They now have third-generation equipment in place," says Major Karl Ball, deputy… Continue

(SP5) I lived in Wreitersweisen, with the Thurn family. They have a solitary house just outside the city limits on the back way to Schweinfurt. If it isn't in my bio, I had two (2) tours at Daley Barracks. I had a break in service and came back in and got Daley Barracks again. There were 3 of us who lived with the Thurns: me, SP4 Clayton Michaels, and SP4 Steven Nickey. (Clayton spoke perfect German and got us this residence. The last half of my second tour was spent in S1 with Clayton and Steve. I was the SIDPERS clerk, and EER clerk.

I was the scout section leader in 3rd platoon Gtrp, a sergeant. Like you stated I didn't know a lot of people in HHT just the Border Officer, NCO and the S2 from working on the border. What did you do at HHT? The crew I hung out with spent a lot of time a Walter's a guest house in town, great German food and wonderful bugers.
