Current profession:
Retired US Army Colonel
Tell us a little about yourself:
I was a Lieutenant serving in 1-32 Armor (commanded by LTC Donn A. Starry) when I was curtailed to join the 11th Cav as it was taken off the West German/Chech boarder and returned to CONUS with duty station at Ft Meade, MD (terrible place for a Cavalry unit). On joining the Regiment, I was assigned as a Platoon Leader in Troop C. After ATTs (Army Training Tests that were done at Camp Pickett, VA) I was rewarded (ha) with assignment as the Assistant Regimental Adjutant (the Regimental Adjutant had been the Evaluator for Troop C). Upon promotion to Captain, I was again assigned to Troop C as the Troop Commander (March 1965) and commanded the troop through a draw-down in personnel followed by a subsequent fill with new soldiers who had finished Basic Training and were to be put through AIT by the Regiment, and new Lieutenants just out of Armor Officer Basic (except for the 2 West Point Lieutenants who did not have to go to Armor Officer Basic). Fun. We then deployed to Vietnam in the summer of 1966 with our newly trained soldiers, the Lieutenants (who were great leaders) and some outstanding NCOs. After 24 months commanding Troop C, I was rotated to Assistant Squadron S3 and within a month, had earned 2 Purple Hearts and a med-evac to the states (so much for safe staff jobs). Subsequent assignments included a return to Vietnam to serve as a Squadron S3 (1-1 Cav, Americal Division), and Assistant G3, Americal Division, command of 2-64 Armor, 3rd Infantry Div (M) in Schweinfurt, Germany, G3 of the 5th Infantry Div (M) at Ft Polk, LA, and Director of the Center for Army Tactics at Ft Leavenworth, KS. After Army retirement, I worked in Emergency Management for Los Angeles County and subsequently retired from that after dealing with earthquakes, fires, and floods. The wife and I picked La Quinta, CA as a retirement home and have lived here since December 2004.
